Making art with Nintendo

Hi all,

two weeks ago I bought Nintendo 2DS. I wanted to play some new Pokemon games like Pokemon X/Y or Moon/Sun :-). But that is another story.

What I want to talk about it cool APP/Game called New Art Academy. Below I will show you some of the paintings I done within this APP. I know that some of the pictures sucks 🙂 I am not an artist but it fun to try it. With Art Academy you will go through different techniques and basically you can learn how to paint in real life.

I think the best painting is the Melon one and worst drawing is the wind mill 🙂 If you have Nintendo 3DS or 2DS go on and try New Art Academy its fun and you can use your stylus more extensively “finally :-)”

See you next time.

The Borkin Button – Guide

Hi all,

Once I saw video made by ETA Prime about One-click Shortcut Key plug or on some sites its called dust proof plug. I thought, “wow that’s good :-)”. I looked to eBay and ordered me an button. They are shipping two for good price (~1$) and they are working great. I am using this button with my Retropie setup but this will work also for Raspbian.

*Disclaimer – I am not responsible for any damage you can do to your Raspberry Pi, software, or to you.*

To get it working you need cable like the one below. You just need to get rid of the ends.

Then you need the button 🙂

Then you have few options. Use soldering iron, tape the cable or use hot glue. I went for hot glue. The main and only reason was that I am still waiting for my new soldering iron.

So obviously you need hot glue gun.

1: Cut the cable to have it like on picture below. Don’t forget to do the same to both ends.

2: Bend both ends of the cable around pins on raspberry pi. (On the below picture is only an example how I did it on the Pi).

Important is to use correct pins see picture below. Third pin on GPIO header (so if you looking on your Rpi as me on the picture its third pin on bottom row) and middle pin of 3.5 mm audio jack.

3: Heat up the hot glue gun and use it on the bended ends around pins

4: Final look

6: Don’t forget to install your button 🙂

5: Install script

The original source is at I installed the script using SSH method. I am Windows user so I used Putty.

Once you are logged on (standard user name is Pi and password is Raspberry) paste this line curl | bash

Hit Enter on your keyboard and wait untill script is installed. Once its finished go to your Rpi and press the button (for me it didn’t worked on the first try so I had to reglued on connection on the middle pin of 3.5 mm audio jack) Rpi should shut down it self like on my video below. If you press the button again Rpi will boot up.

Thank you Matt Borkin for the idea and script. Also Thank you ZT Group. 🙂

Overclocking RPi3 – Guide

Hi all,

*Disclaimer – I am not responsible for any damage you can do to your Raspberry Pi, software, or to you.*

finally I received the cooper heat sinks I ordered on eBay. Even though I had 4cm fan installed over the Pi I wanted to wait for the heat sinks.

Lets take a look at them installed, see below.

Top view

If you are interested in the keyboard behind RPi its Corsair Raptor K50 🙂 and cables connected to GPIO are heading to small fan. One think you should know RPi3 can’t be overclocked from Raspberry Pi setup like RPi or Rpi2. You need to modify config file on SD card.

Good start how to oc RPi3 has ETA PRIME but I found some flaws in his guide.

So I recommend to follow it only partially :-). What is important to know what OC settings will void your warranty.

Below text is from Github

!Those setting will void your warranty!

  • over_voltage greater than 6

  • force_turbo=1

  • temp_limit greater than 85

With over_voltage don’t go above 5, only if you are super crazy and want to try run Raspberry Pi on 1,45 GHz. Rising over_voltage can help with stability issues also this will raise temperature of CPU.

Forcing turbo means that CPU will always run on highest speed -> stock clock is 1,2GHz so it will run all the time on that speed. Normally CPU reducing speed if no demanding applications are running. This setting is also somewhat affecting temperature.

At last but not least temp_limit means the temp. threshold when CPU starts to throttling.

Make a backup

So first thing to do put you SD card to PC. Then in root directory there is config file make a backup :-). Then we need to modify the config file. You can open it in notepad (not recommended) or you can use Notepad++ as ETA mentioned in his video. If you are using Notepad++ go to line 43.

On that line is written #arm_freg=800. First delete this text and replace is by your OC settings. You can use my settings below, its only mild OC.

  • arm_freq=1300
  • gpu_freq=500
  • core_freq=500
  • sdram_freq=500
  • over_voltage=2

As you can see I used over_voltage=2 (no warranty void). With this setting RPi is rock stable and temp is ~40°C on idle and ~60°C  during playing N64 game. For most 2D emulators you need higher arm_freq but for more graphic intensive systems like Dreamcast or Nintendo 64 or PlayStation 1 you need higher gpu_freq. Core_freg is same as gpu_freg so set it on the same speed.

Save config file and return SD card back to RPi and boot up. Connect to your RPi through SSH using PuTy (How to use PuTy – User name is pi and password raspberry.

To see temperature use command vcgencmd measure_temp

Ok that’s it. Go and play with it more 🙂 try different settings play games etc, its up to you. Please bear in mind that you do it at your risk…

See you next time!

Is it worth to buy new AAA games?

Hi all,

is it worth to buy new AAA games with huge budgets? I think many people have or had this question in their mind and many of those people are already decided. For me personally what I saw in the past few year till today, most of the AAA games are sh*t. Well there are some exceptions like GTA5, Witcher 3, Doom and maybe some more.On the other hand there are handful of games which as I wrote suck big time. Just to mention it’s mainly because poor technical state.  I can name some of them. Number one is Mass Effect: Andromeda followed by the Dishonored 2, Deus Ex, For Honor or two years ago last installment of Batman game.

Big bad corporate

Most of these games cost or costed around 60€/$. Can you imagine you bought a broken game and you can’t even play it. I admit that I am buying games only at discounted price or I buy them in some sale madness action or on sites like the HumbleBundle. It’s hard to trust those big companies, you know they just carving for money and they don’t give a thing about consumers. I know it since I worked before in big big corporate and those companies only focus on marketing their stuff so they can sell products faster with reduced owner cost.

Good old games

I build my PC last year and it’s powerful enough to run all new games on high or ultra settings at 60FPS but I am not using its power as I should. Why? After GTA5 I went back to good old Mass Effect trilogy since I never finished third episode. I am also playing old dos games like Master of Orion 2 and now also old console games on Raspberry Pi3.

What I want to say with this blog is that just don’t buy new games from big corporate companies and support more indie developers. Or wait for discounts since new games don’t have high value any more. If you are in mood for good games check GOG or play some old console games for SNES, Sega Megadrive or PSX :-).

If you want to have some fun with Mass Effect: Andromeda.

See you next time.

RetroPie – more stuff

Hi all,

few weeks ago I was writing about my Raspberry Pi – B how great it is and what projects I done with it. Since then I upgraded to Raspberry Pi3. I was focusing more on retro gaming then on other technical projects with sensors etc..

RetroPi, what is RetroPi you asking? Its basically bunch of emulators. Emulators like for Game Boy, Game Boy color/advance, PSone, N64 and more. Installation is simple like installing Noobs image of Raspbian 🙂 . Then you need game pad or keyboard for control, in some cases mouse.

What I would like to do is portable gaming console or in other word handheld but that’s another story.

Currently I have emulated in RetroPie over ten system. Most games I have for PSX followed by Sega Megadrive/Genesis and Super Nintendo. I also really like Sega 32X and Sega CD though there aren’t many good games for those systems.

What stand out is Dreamcast. Yes that’s the console with tragic fate. Thankfully it has many many good games. Visually its equivalent to PS2 and Pi3 has enough power to run games at decent frame rate.  Well some of the games :-).

Other part of RetroPie is setting up the system visually to fit your desire. There are many themes or you can activate attract mode. You can have custom image or custom video playing during booting up system. When I am using RetroPie I am always thinking how great the freeware is and how advance it is.

Attract mode

I think that it RetroPie would be paid it wouldn’t be the same and probably it would be missing lots of functionality. There are bunch of videos on how to set up stuff in RetroPie. I can name two YouTubers which are really good. ETA PRIME and Easy Hax.   retropielogo2015download

I am having great fun with Raspberry Pi3 and RetroPie. If you have Rpi its worth to try out RetroPie. Oh there is one downside of Raspberry Pi3 and that’s overheating but I never had that issue lots of people does have overheating problems.

Here are some pictures of my build.

See you next time :-).

I have an Idea

Hi all,

I have an idea for something great! Its something which can help to companies with their energy mix. Ad far I looked on internet and I checked patent office, there is nothing like it.

What I should do? I think I will go to patent office with my idea because why not :-). What will will be then the next step? Go to Kickstarter or similar crowdfunding website and start my project there?

I know one thing that my idea is great for me but will it be great also for other people? :-)…idea_1920-800x600

Playing with Raspberry Pi – Five Projects

Hi all,

Yes, even I have RPi :-). I got it as present from my friend and colleague Harry. It is Raspberry Pi B+ with 512MB or RAM and two usb ports. The heart of Pi is one core SOC Broadcom. So pi has only little power to do anything but it can do loads of stuff. I did several projects with Pi and it was always fun.

The Projects

Pirate radio, that was fun. The idea is create FM transmitter, basically you can create your own radio. There is nice script and guide on Makezin. Created by Sam Freeman and Wynter Woods. Its easy to follow steps in guide and it will take you approximately one hour to finish the project. Beware in most states its forbidden to use it, and frequency modulator in Pi is strong enough to cover whole block with big antenna! Also what I heard this project can be done only with RPi 1 and 0.

Torrent machine/box, that was little bit more difficult than pirate radio. Here is complete guide on Pi My Life Up. Torrent box serve as torrent downloading machine which you can access from remotely. This remote access looks like website where you can add torrent link. It works even with magnet links. I used it to download stuff at our old flat where we had slow internet and because RPi is using only little bit of energy it was very cheap and efficient.

I was testing it with some GBA (Game Boy advance) games, and it worked. Of course you will need to do some tweaking and GBA games don’t like to run in full HD 🙂

VNC control, if you want to control RPi remotely this is what you need to do. Install PuTy and VNC viewer like RealVNC. New Raspberry Pi OS update has built in VNC server so you don’t need to install VNC and then set up server etc., like I had to do before update :-). Here is simple guide, I am using RPi with VNC on all the time, and for testing new stuff or just using terminal its easy to use. I am using PuTy for terminal commands, when I don’t need to see Raspbian.

Dosbox, yes good old dos. I remember as child how I was writing all the commands in MS Dos. Like CD “something” to change folder, Mount, Format, etc.. With RPi I could went back to my child hood. I was tried  games like Arkanoid which runs very well, then Blackthorn and Master of Orion 2. Last named game is one of my most favorite games of all time. I am playing it on PC mobile phone, tablet. You name it. Pity that on RPi it was slow, really slow :-(. In future I will try some classical RTS like Dune II. I almost forget to give you link to guide.

Future Projects

From eBay I bought some sensors and I want to do something more difficult, including Python programing. So you can expect more blog post about RPi, once I will have my setup ready.
